Mr.Beast: "Why It's Easier To Get 5M Views than 100k Views"

Here’s some valuable advice from Mr.Beast himself: 

“It’s easier to get 5 million views on 1 video than it is to get 100k views on 50 videos.” 

He mentioned this a while ago on the Joe Rogan Podcast, but to save you 2.5 hours of listening… I’m going to summarize this point for you. 

While YouTube’s algorithm is very much a mysterious black box, there are pretty much two metrics that you should be focusing on: 

Click-through rate (CTR) and average % viewed (retention). 

These are metrics YouTube has been telling us about for years. It’s also agreed upon by virtually all viral creators to be the most important. 

So then why is it easier to get 5 million views on 1 video than it is to get 100k views on 50 videos?

Well, let’s take 2 examples from one of my old channels, The Human Experiment. 

Here are those same metrics for 3 of our most viewed videos on the channel: 

Now let’s look at those metrics for the 2 lowest viewed videos on the channel: 

You might look at this and think “oh yeah that makes sense… better metrics equals more views!”  

And sure, you are right, but you’re actually missing a nuanced yet extremely important point... 

The metrics and views don’t scale linearly… they scale exponentially. 

As you can see from the example, my retention and CTR in the top videos are 3x better than the bottom videos. You would think that means the top videos would get about 3x more views right? 

But look at it… with 3x better metrics, the top videos got 50x-100x more views! 

ARE YOU GETTING IT?! 

This is why it’s easier to get 5 million views on 1 video than it is to get 100k views on 50 videos…  

Because if you spend 2x or 3x more time making your video great (the time it would have taken you to make your second or third video)... 

...you may get 20x more views.
